Collection of Works

The theme of NAMI's 2023-2024 projects is Come as You are: expressing mental health through art. Art, for centuries, has been a medium in which individuals can express emotions, feelings, and struggles unable to be put into words. This ability allows for the most fascinating, unique, and meaningful art to be produced, which we hope to document in the works we have collected. All credit goes to the respective artists, with their social media handles and/or shops linked. We encourage supporting these artists so they can continue to do what they love!

"Melancholia"

@victoriaoltart

Olt describes the watercolor painting as "...[expressing] a feeling of detachment and a warped sense of time caused by a depressive state of mind" the galactic, almost 'out-of-this-world' theme of the painting further helps express this ideology as the woman in the painting wears a blank expression, as her surroundings warp beyond her control.

"7th Generation"

7th generation by Rose B. Simpson can be interpreted as a representation of Simpsons ethnic identity and experience with generational trauma. Simpson writes that her journey as an artist is to, "heal the damages I have experienced as a human being of our postmodern and postcolonial era." the emotions on faces sculpted grow weary as they continue to stack up, displaying how the trauma of one generation filters down to the preceding generations.

"Loss" by Miles Johnston encapsulates the grief that comes with experiencing loss. Such emotions of grief can lead to prolonged grief disorder, which occurs when an individual has difficulty adapting to the loss of a loved one. American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic defines it as a condition that involves intense, painful emotions that persist for more than 12 months in adults and more than 6 months in children and adolescents. "Anxiety"

Tierny explains the painting being reflective of her own experiences with anxiety, "The lungs being squeezed by hands represent panic attacks: we cannot explain whether it’s ourselves causing these attacks or something internal. The eyes remain white because I can never focus in my anxious state, some people can black out... All the black spots building off the black cloud symbolize how our anxiety grows and builds off everything around us and our mind."
